Local Area Networking is the connection of computers together in a "Local Area" (I.E. The same office, building or series of buildings in a complex) to share resources, such as files, printers, and even Internet Connections. Connecting multiple computers to a network without a File Server is commonly referred to as Peer-to-Peer networking. This is the most common form of networking in homes.
Networks are also used to allow
individual PCs to talk to File Servers. This process is called Client/Server
Networking. Servers provide Network Security, a centralized point
to store files, access company documents, templates, printers and
databases. Company Internet connections are commonly routed through
file servers, but rarely through the company's main file server.
To do so, would increase awareness to the server's existance to
outside and possibly hostile parties (I.E. Hackers).
